Riteish Deshmukh, Genelia Deshmukh starrer Marathi romantic drama Ved, which arrived in theatres on December 30, 2022, has taken the box office by storm! Contrary to the general box office trend, the film is doing better business in its second weekend than opening weekend.
According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Riteish’s maiden directorial venture has raked in Rs. 12.75 crores in its second weekend. After earning Rs 5.70 crores on second Sunday, the film has taken its total box office collection to Rs. 33.42 crores nett in 10 days.
The film, which also marks Genelia Deshmukh’s acting debut in Marathi cinema, had raked in Rs 20.67 crores in first week, which is a second highest first week collection for any Marathi film after Sairat’s (2016) Rs. 25 crores.
Along with the positive word of mouth from the general audience as well as critics, Ajay Atul’s music and the lack of competition from Bollywood is also working in the film’s favour to maintain a steady growth at the ticket window, and looking at its current box office trend, it’s safe to assume that the film will continue its dream run at the box office on weekdays too.
Currently Nagraj Manjule’s Sairat (2016) holds the record for the highest grossing Marathi film of all time by earning Rs 82.95 crores and although it’s too early to predict whether Riteish Deshmukh’s romantic drama can take over the title of ‘highest grosser of Marathi cinema’, we can safely assume that it will definitely take the second position, which is currently hold by Nana Patekar starrer Natsamrat (2016) at Rs. 40 crores.
For the unversed, the romantic drama is an official remake of Telugu film Majili (2019), which incidentally also starred real life couple Samantha Ruth Prabhu-Naga Chaitanya. Riteish Deshmukh confirmed it during the trailer launch of Ved.
Ved marks the fifth venture together for the real life couple who made their acting debut together in 2003’s romantic drama ‘Tujhe Meri Kasam‘. After their last venture Mister Mummy (2022) turned out to be a huge box office bomb, the raving success of Ved at box office will give a huge relief to the couple, who are also the producers of the film.
Along with Riteish-Genelia, Ved also stars Ashok Saraf, Jiya Shankar and Shubhankar Tawde. Salman Khan has also made a special appearance in the film where he is seen shaking his legs with Riteish in the song Ved Lavlay.
