Kaviyoor Ponnamma, a beloved veteran of Malayalam cinema, passed away on Friday at the age of 79. The legendary actress was undergoing treatment for stage 4 cancer and was admitted to Lisie Hospital in Kochi earlier this month. Sadly, her condition worsened, and she breathed her last in the evening.
Kaviyoor Ponnamma was a name synonymous with motherly roles in Malayalam cinema. Her journey in acting began in theatre at just 14 years old, and she made her film debut in Sree Rama Pattabhishekam. From there, she went on to star in over 1,000 films, sharing the screen with icons like Prem Naseer, Sathyan, Mohanlal and Mammootty. Remarkably, she played Mohanlal’s mother in more than 50 films, cementing her place in the hearts of Malayali audiences.
Ponnamma’s versatility was evident throughout her career, where she even took on negative roles and ventured into film production. She received four Kerala State Film Awards for Best Supporting Actress, a testament to her immense talent and contribution to cinema.
Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan paid tribute to the late actress, lauding her significant contributions to both theatre and film. Fans and the public will have the opportunity to pay their last respects as her mortal remains will be kept at Municipal Townhall in Kalamassery on Saturday morning. A cremation ceremony will take place later in the afternoon at her home in Aluva.
Born in 1945 in Kaviyoor, Pathanamthitta, Ponnamma came from a family deeply rooted in the arts. Influenced by her father, she developed a passion for music but ultimately found her calling in acting. She was married to the late film producer Mani Swami and is survived by her daughter Bindu and son-in-law Venkatram.
