Madath Thekkepaattu Vasudevan Nair fondly known MT Vasudevan Nair and also as MT, one of the most celebrated figures in Malayalam literature and cinema passed away on December 25, 2024 at the age of 91. Born on July 15, 1933 MT Vasudevan Nair made a remarkable mark in Indian literature and cinema through his exceptional storytelling, screenplay writing and film direction. His passing leaves a deep void in the literary and cultural world.
The legendary writer was admitted to Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala a few days ago due to breathing issues. As per reports in Manorama, his funeral will take place at 5 p.m. at the Mavoor Road Crematorium. His mortal remains were brought to his residence late Thursday night, where many prominent personalities and admirers from literature, politics and cinema paid their respects. Among those present were actor Mohanlal, Minister AK Saseendran, former MLA M Swaraj and more.
Tributes have been pouring in from across the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, taking to X (formerly Twitter) expressed his grief stating, “Saddened by the passing away of Shri MT Vasudevan Nair Ji, one of the most respected figures in Malayalam cinema and literature. His works, with their profound exploration of human emotions, have shaped generations and will continue to inspire many more. He also gave voice to the silent and marginalised. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan shared a heartfelt message, describing MT Vasudevan Nair as a cultural icon. “With MT Vasudevan Nair’s passing, we’ve lost a doyen of Malayalam literature who elevated our language to global heights. A true cultural icon, he captured the soul of Kerala through his timeless works. His steadfast commitment to secularism and humanity leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations. Heartfelt condolences to his family and the cultural community,” he wrote.

Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran also paid tribute through his Instagram story saying, “Rest in peace Legend!” Actress Manju Warrier shared a touching memory on Instagram writing, “When Sir passes, I remember a writing sheet. Nine years ago, when I went to Tirur Thunjan Parambil for the inauguration of Vidyarambham Kalotsavam, what he gifted me. I was looking at those fingers that day.”
MT Vasudevan Nair’s career was a blend of literary brilliance and cinematic mastery. He penned over 54 screenplays, directed seven films, and won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay four times. His accolades include the Jnanpith Award in 1995 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005.
