One such recent film is Nazriya’s ‘Sookshamadarshini’ which has been making waves with its intense storyline for months now. The movie revolves around a girl who falls in love with someone of the same gender and is ultimately killed by her own family to protect their societal reputation. However, a recent murder case in Hyderabad shocking mirrors this chilling plotline, sparking concerns about the influence of films on real-life crimes.

In Hyderabad, an ex-army officer named Gurumurthy has been accused of murdering his 35-year-old wife in a gruesome manner. As per the reports stated in Hindustan Times reveal that he chopped her body into pieces, boiled them in a pressure cooker and later disposed of the remains in a nearby lake. This horrifying act came to light after the victim’s mother lodged a missing complaint when her daughter didn’t return home after a heated argument with her husband. CCTV footage from the neighborhood showed Gurumurthy carrying a large bag, leading the police to investigate him further.

What makes this case even more alarming is an anonymous Instagram post claiming that Gurumurthy told the police he was inspired by Nazriya’s ‘Sookshamadarshini’. While the film’s storyline differs, the post has raised concerns about how certain narratives can potentially influence vulnerable individuals.

The crime occurred in Venkateswara Colony under the jurisdiction of the Meerpet Police Station in Hyderabad’s Rangareddy district. The victim’s mother had filed a missing complaint, leading the police to uncover the gruesome details. The case has left the city in shock with discussions emerging about how some individuals interpret art and media in dangerous ways.

Sookshamadarshini, directed by MC Jithin and featuring Nazriya Nazim and Basil Joseph in lead roles was released in theaters on November 22, 2024. The film which was made on a budget of ₹14 crore and grossed ₹55 crore globally. It recently began streaming on Disney+ Hotstar on January 11, 2025.
