Mohanlal’s highly anticipated directorial debut film Barroz: Guardian of Treasures has finally hit theaters on December 25, 2024 and has generated considerable buzz. The film, a 3D children’s fantasy adventure marks a significant milestone for Mohanlal. However, despite the anticipation, as per Sacnilk reports Barroz box office day 1 collections stood at Rs 3.65 crore across all language including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi.

The movie released during the Christmas holiday, enjoyed decent Malayalam occupancy of 57.22% on its opening day. Major cities like Kochi saw 68.75% occupancy over 127 shows while Thiruvananthapuram reported 52.5% occupancy across 114 shows. Competing against another recently released Malaylam movie Unni Mukundan’s Marco which was in its fifth day, Barroz still managed to perform strongly trailing closely behind Marco’s Rs 3.74 crore day 5 earnings, according to industry reports.

Barroz revolves around a treasure guardian tasked with protecting Vasco da Gama’s hidden wealth for over 400 years, entrusted to hand it over only to a true descendant of the explorer. While the film’s opening is better than Mohanlal’s previous release, Neru (Rs 2.8 crore on day one) it falls short compared to his earlier release Malaikottai Vaaliban which had an opening day collection of Rs 5.65 crore.

Made on a reported budget of Rs 20 crore with an additional Rs 100 crore spent on production and marketing, the film faces high expectations to perform well over the long Christmas weekend. The strong response from children, coupled with Mohanlal’s loyal fanbase, could help it sustain.

Produced by Aashirvad Cinemas, the movie stars Mohanlal alongside an international cast including Maya Rao West, Ignacio Mateos and Cesar Lorente Raton. As fans and critics alike share their thoughts on the film, all eyes are now on the upcoming days to see if Barroz can gain momentum and turn its fortunes around.
