Actor Mammootty Faces Cyber Bullying For His Role In Film, Puzhu

Malayalam actor Mammootty was targeted by right-wing social media users for his alleged involvement in an anti-Brahmanical film.

Malayalam actor Mammootty has become a target of online harassment due to his role in the 2022 film ‘Puzhu’. He has been subjected to cyberattacks by certain right-wing sympathizers on the internet. Some individuals on social media have alleged that the film holds anti-Brahmanical sentiments.

This controversy arose following a recent interview with the husband of the film director Ratheena P T, who stated that the film intended to criticize the upper-caste Hindu community.

For the unversed, in ‘Puzhu’, Mammootty portrayed the character of an upper-caste Brahmin who opposes his sister’s union with a person from a lower caste. Some of the individuals targeting the actor online criticized the national award-winning actor using his birth name, Muhammed Kutty. Directed by debutant filmmaker Ratheena P T, ‘Puzhu’ is a psychological drama.

Amidst escalating controversy, political figures, including ministers, publicly voiced their support for the actor. State Revenue Minister K Rajan emphasized that Mammootty is “the pride of Malayalis, and he will always remain so”. He added, “The Sangh politics of calling Mammootty as Muhammad Kutty, Director Kamal as Kamaluddin, and Vijay as Joseph Vijay is useless here. This is Kerala”.

Meanwhile, actor Mammootty is yet to address this matter. On the work front, he is currently gearing up for his upcoming film, “Turbo”.
