Pak SC suspends notification extending Army chief General Bajwa’s tenure

Pakistan Supreme Court on Tuesday suspended Imran Khan's decision to extend the tenure of General Qamar Bajwa as the Pakistan army chief.

Pakistan Supreme Court on Tuesday suspended the extension of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa. His tenure was earlier extended by Prime Minister Imran Khan for another three years.

The extension of General Bajwa’s tenure has been suspended till further hearing on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Imran Khan had on November 19 approved the extension of the tenure of Bajwa for another three years.

Raising questions over the procedure opted by the Imran Khan government in extending the tenure, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Asif Saeed Khosa along with the three-member bench suspended the notification, issuing notices to all parties including the army chief and adjourned the hearing till Wednesday.

The chief justice of Pakistan, while suspending the extension on Tuesday said that only the President of Pakistan can approve such extensions in tenure and not the Prime Minister.

However, the Imran Khan government argued that General Qamar Bajwa’s tenure was extended by Imran Khan only after the President approved of the move.
