Trump Signs Tibet Policy for appointing the next Dalai Lama without China’s interference

US President Donald Trump signed the Tibet Policy reaffirming the right of the Tibetan Buddhist community for appointing the successor to the 14th Dalai Lama.

US President Donald Trump signed the Tibet Policy reaffirming the right of the Tibetan Buddhist community to appoint the next Dalai Lama. The law calls for an international coalition to form a US consulate in Tibet. Furthermore, the law is also to prevent China’s interference in the appointment.

Donald Trump signed the Tibet Policy and Support Act last week inciting backlash from the Chinese foreign ministry. According to the ministry, this legislation is a clear attempt at meddling with China’s affairs. Wang Wenbin, the spokesperson of China’s foreign ministry urged the US to stop meddling with the country’s matters and refrain from signing negative clauses. Otherwise, this shall further harm cooperation and bilateral relations between the two nations.

The Tibetan Policy and Support Act of 2020 improvises and reaffirms various provisions ad programmes with relation to Tibet. The legislation calls for establishing a US consulate in Tibet’s main city called Lhasa. Furthermore, it re-authorises the absolute right of Tibetans to choose the successor to the 14th Dalai Lama and preserve the Tibetan environment.

The US law comes in response to Beijing arresting a boy named Gedhun Choekyi Nyima in May 1995 and appointing its own Panchen Lama. Panchn Lama was the second-most senior personality of Tibetan Buddhism’s largest school. The Dalai Lama had identified Gedhun as the reincarnation of the senior figure before he was arrested by Chinese authorities. Human rights organizations have announced the Panchen Lama as the youngest political prisoner of the world. The boy was just six years old during his disappearance.

According to Chinese foreign ministry, Beijing firmly rejected the US legislation and declared Tibet-related issues as “domestic affairs”. Furthermore, according to China’s president Xi Jinping, Dalai Lama is a dangerous separatist. Moreover, Beijing’s approval is required to appoint the successor to Tibetan’s spiritual leader.

Lobsang Sangay, president of Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamshala said that the US legislation represents hope and justice. It is a powerful message ensuring the Tibetans of the US support to protect their religion, human and environmental rights.
