Chef Floyd Cardoz Passes Away Due To Complications From Coronavirus

Co-Founder of Hunger Inc. Hospitality Chef Floyd Cardoz passes away at the age of 59 due to Coronavirus.

Prominent chef and owner of Mumbai’s Bombay Canteen, O Pedro and Bombay Sweet Shop, Floyd Cardoz, passes away at age of 59 due to complications from the novel coronavirus.

His company Hunger Inc. Hospitality group released a statement in which revealed his untimely death, "It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the passing away of Chef Floyd Cardoz (59 years), Co-Founder, Hunger Inc. Hospitality, on March 25, 2020, in New Jersey, USA," the company stated that, "He is survived by his mother Beryl, wife Barkha and sons Justin and Peter. Floyd tested positive for Covid-19 … on March 18 and was being treated for the same at Mountainside Medical Centre, New Jersey."

Cardoz admitted himself to hospital in New Jersey after feeling feverish and later he was tested positive for the virus. Few hours after he was admitted to the hospital, Floyd gave an update about his health, on Instagram, he wrote, “Sincere apologies everyone. I am sorry for causing undue panic around my earlier post. I was feeling feverish and hence as a precautionary measure, admitted myself into hospital in New York. I was hugely anxious about my state of health and my post was highly irresponsible causing panic in several quarters. I returned to New York on March 8th via Frankfurt.”

Cardoz joined the culinary school and interned at Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Intercontinental Hotel. He also studied in Switzerland before taking his talents to New York. He then started off as executive chef at a ground-breaking modern Indian restaurant Tabla, which he opened with Danny Meyer in 1998, He later helmed Meyer's North End Grill, while he competed in the third season of Top Chef Masters in 2011 and eventually won the season.

He was a four-time James Beard Award nominee. He was the author of two cookbooks, One Spice, Two Spice: American Food, Indian Flavors and Flavorwalla: Big Flavor. Bold Spices. A New Way to Cook the Foods You Love.

He recently shot for a Netflix documentary "Ugly Delicious" with actor Aziz Ansari. Many of the top chefs sent their condolences, including Michelin star chef Vikas Khanna and Food mogul David Chang.
