Amid the nationwide lockdown due to the novel coronavirus, a top BCCI official has revealed that team India’s top players- Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could be left stranded in pandemic-stricken Mumbai whenever the training sessions resume. Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) could allow outdoor training practice as early as from next week onwards when the Government announces further ease in the lockdown measures.

However, team India’s two top players- Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma reside in Mumbai where there are the majority of the COVID-19 cases and the city also harbors the most number of death counts because of the virus. Mumbai currently falls into the Red Zone and to curb the spread of the virus, tough measures can be imposed.

BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal said, "For players like Kohli and Rohit, the restrictions are there in Mumbai and might stay.”

For the unversed, Mumbai has recorded 1000 COVID-19 deaths account for more than one-third of India’s fatalities so far. Dhumal said that if the Government allows any ease in the 2-month old lockdown then they will start “some skilled-based training” outdoors in the other parts of the nation.

While international cricket matches and Indian Premier League (IPL) have fallen victim to the coronavirus pandemic, many cricketers are sharing videos and photos of their indoor training and other activities on social media platforms to keep the fans entertained during the lockdown.

India has a short tour in Sri Lanka scheduled for June but it is widely expected to be called off. Dhumal said, "Everybody would be keen to hit the ground and the idea is whenever we are ready for cricket to resume, they (the players) are able to give their 100 percent."
