Indian Cricketers Recall 1983 World Cup Final

The former and current Indian cricketers took to social media to recall India’s maiden World Cup victory that came 37 years back in 1983. Read below to know more.

On June 25, 1983, the Indian cricket team under the leadership of Kapil Dev defeated the might West Indies by 43 runs at the Mecca of cricket, the Lord’s cricket ground. It was India’s maiden World Cup title and Kapil Dev recalled the fond memories and posted a picture of him holding the World Cup trophy in England. Apart from Kapil Dev, former India all-rounder and current Head Coach Ravi Shastri too recalled the greatest chapter in the history of Indian cricket. Shastri tweeted, "#ThisDayThatYear On 25th June in 1983, we believed and we became - World Champions and changed the face of #Cricket in #India once and for all. @therealkapildev @ICC @cricketworldcup.”

Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh also took a trip down the memory lane and thanked Kapil Dev along with the rest of World Cup winning Indian team for inspiring future generations. Harbhajan shared a throwback picture from the iconic moment and captioned it, “37 years back..Thank you @therealkapildev and whole team for inspiring us #WorldCup1983.”

Former India batsman Mohammad Kaif also hailed Kapil Dev and shared the ‘iconic image’ to celebrate the 37th anniversary of India’s maiden World Cup victory. Kaif tweeted, "June 25, 1983: The iconic image of Kapil Dev holding the World Cup Trophy at Lord's is a watershed moment in Indian cricket history. It changed cricket in India. This win inspired the next generation to achieve the impossible & dream BIG.”

Suresh Raina too shared a few pictures of the special day on Twitter and wrote, "One of the most important events in the History of Indian Cricket This win inspired India's future generations to dream big! 37 years to this glory of #WorldCup1983 @therealkapildev.”

For the unversed, in the 1983 World Cup final, India lost the toss and were asked to bat by the West Indies skipper Clive Lloyd. Krishnamachari Srikkanth top-scored for India with a knock of 38 as India was bowled out for 183.

Guarding the target of 184 on the scoreboard, Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath took three wickets apiece as the West Indies were bundled out for 140, losing the final by 43 runs.

The moment of Kapil Dev lifting the World Cup trophy with the entire Indian team still gives goosebumps to cricket buffs.
