MS Dhoni and Ricky Ponting are without doubt two of the most successful captains in the history of cricket. They both have two World Cup titles to their name and have led their teams to great heights. On Wednesday, former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi was asked to choose between the two and he said his choice would be MS Dhoni.

Shahid Afridi also explained the reason behind choosing MS Dhoni over Ricky Ponting. He said that Dhoni had led a young team and that is why he rates him higher than the former Aussie skipper.

The former Pakistan skipper held a Q&A session on Twitter and one user quizzed him to pick better captain between MS Dhoni and Ricky Ponting. In response to the same, Afridi said, “I rate Dhoni a bit higher than Ponting as he developed a new team full of youngsters.”

MS Dhoni is regarded as one of the best captain team India has ever had. Dhoni notably led an Indian team without most of their established stars to glory in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, before also winning the 2011 World Cup.

On the other hand, Ricky Ponting who captained Australia in 2003 and 2007 for consecutive World Cup wins, inherited a well-settled squad from predecessor Steve Waugh and continued Australia’s domination right through the 2000s.

Afridi also named Viv Richards as his favourite batsman, while he said Abdul Qadir was his all-time favourite spinner.

When asked to pick the best bowler in the world currently, Afridi chose Aussie seamer, Pat Cummins.
