Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh popularly hailed as the architect of India’s economic reforms, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. Dr Singh was rushed to Delhi’s AIIMS at around 8 pm after losing consciousness at his residence. Despite efforts, he was pronounced dead at 9:51 pm. The news has left the nation mourning, as tributes pour in from across political and social spectrums.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Singh “one of India’s most distinguished leaders,” highlighting his contributions to economic policy and his insightful interventions in Parliament. Modi added, “His leadership improved countless lives. The nation has lost a visionary.”
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also took to social media and shared an emotional message saying, “Manmohan Singhji led India with immense wisdom and integrity. His humility inspired millions. I’ve lost a mentor and guide.” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also paid tribute, reflecting on his selfless service.
Dr Manmohan Singh served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 and was instrumental in shaping the country’s economic policies. Under PV Narasimha Rao’s government, he introduced landmark reforms in 1991, steering India away from economic crisis and into an era of liberalisation and globalisation. His tenure as Finance Minister and later as Prime Minister laid the foundation for India’s economic growth trajectory.
The veteran leader retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year after a 33-year-long tenure. Born on September 26, 1932 in Punjab, Dr Singh is survived by his wife Gursharan Kaur and three daughters. His passing marks the end of an era but his contributions will continue to inspire future generations!
