Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘GOAT’ To Use Hollywood-Level De-Aging Technology From ‘Gemini Man’?

Thalapathy Vijay’s upcoming film, ‘GOAT’, short for ‘The Greatest Of All Time’, is among the most anticipated releases of the year. This film marks a significant milestone as it will be Vijay’s first project after fully emerging into the political world. Directed by Venkat Prabhu, the film is set to introduce cutting-edge de-aging technology, similar to what was used in Hollywood’s ‘Gemini Man’, to the Indian film industry.

‘GOAT’ is an espionage thriller that revolves around Gandhi, a hostage negotiator, field agent and spy working for the Special Anti-Terrorist Squad (SATS) in collaboration with RAW. In this movie, Thalapathy Vijay will play dual roles—a father and his son. To portray these characters convincingly, the film requires a distinct representation of both an older and a younger version of the actor. This is where the de-aging technology has been inspired by ‘Gemini Man’, as revealed by the director.

In a recent interview with India Today, director Venkat Prabhu shared how he initially wrote the script with the idea of casting different actors for the roles of the father and son. However, his friend Vikram introduced him to the concept of de-aging technology, which had been effectively used in Hollywood to make actors appear younger on screen. Inspired by this, Venkat Prabhu decided to adapt this technology for Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘GOAT’.

Prabhu also recounted how, during the shooting of Vijay’s earlier films Varisu and Leo, the actor assumed that Prabhu’s script was similar to Gemini Man and asked about it. Prabhu then clarified the actor that while the storyline was different, they planned to use the same technology that made Will Smith look decades younger in the 2019 film directed by Ang Lee.

In addition of Vijay’s younger appearance, the film will also use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to bring the late actor Vijayakanth back to life on screen. Vijayakanth passed away on December 28, 2023, with whom Prabhu had initially planned to shoot scenes with him. However, after his passing, Prabhu asked permission from Vijayakanth’s family to continue with the project as a tribute. The filmmakers then decided to utilize AI technology to recreate Vijayakanth’s presence in the film, making this tribute a heartfelt and respectful gesture.

Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘GOAT’ is slated for release on September 5, 2024. The film also stars Prabhu Deva, Prashanth, Ajmal Ameer, Jayaram and others in pivotal roles, making it a star-studded affair that promises to captivate audiences with its blend of technology and storytelling.
