Did you know the Papa Kahte Hai actress Mayoori Kango was introduced to films not by choice but by chance? Kango, who had ‘acting‘ as a part of her life debuted in the industry with the film ‘Naseem’. The director Saeed Akhtar Mirza, was working on the film with Mayuri’s mother when he saw her and insister her to work in the film that revolved around the Babri demolition case.
In a candid conversation with Lehren Retro, Mayuri Kango opens up about her short-lived cinematic career and her experience as an actress. Currently, Mayuri Kango work at Google India as India industry head – agency business. She had quit the journey of glamour right after performing for a couple of decades.
As she reveals, she had been a part of innumerable theatre plays right from her childhood. All because of her mother’s profession. This is why the Bollywood never charmed her by its showshaa and ‘acting’ was never a dream for her. It just came to her plate butnaturally.
The accidentally received film Naseem got her enough recognition that she was offered a prominent role by director Mahesh Bhatt in his film ‘Papa Kahte Hain” and her career only grew more and more ahead of it.
She also opened up on the weird gender dynamics in the entertainment industry, that still continues to hold a significance. Discussing how Indian films remain largely male-dominated, Mayuri reflects on her journey as an actress. As quoted by her, “I don’t believe in getting films opposite somebody. I do films for my own good.”
