The recent surge in assault cases has sparked widespread outrage in India, with citizens protesting across streets and railway tracks for justice. After Riteish Deshmukh expressed his anger over the case in Badlapur, actress and activist Swara Bhasker has also spoken out. She addressed the media about the Kolkata and Badlapur incidents, emphasizing the need for urgent action.
During the interview with Times Now, Swara Bhasker shared as a citizen of India she is “shocked, ashamed and horrified” watching at the increasing violence against women. Adding on, she criticized about there’s hardly any progress since the terrifying Delhi Nirbhaya case and expressed her fear as a new mother, stating, “We are living among monsters”. To which, Swara called out for men to be restricted in public spaces, suggesting a “curfew on men” and prevent them from being out after 7 or 9 pm. She emphasized that the problem lies with men, not women.
When questioned about her statement made on Yogi Adityanath’s resignation after the Hathras rape case, Swara was asked why she has not demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She argued that resignations should start with the highest leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom she criticized for always protecting the guilty and claimed that the BJP party is responsible for protecting such culprits.
Riteish Deshmukh took to X (formerly Twitter) to demand severe punishment for “this demon” and called to bring back the harsh historical laws set by Chhatrapati Shivaji Mahara. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to address the Badlapur case and actions against the involved school. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed the police to investigate, while former CM Uddhav Thackeray mentioned that he had intended to pass the ‘Shakti Bill’ during his tenure but was ‘toppled’ before it could be act out.
Swara Bhasker’s comments have ignited a debate on how to address rising violence against women and the effectiveness of the Indian legal and political systems. As the nation struggles with these issues, the call for systemic change and accountability continues to grow.
