Can Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar Revive Rom-Coms In Bollywood?

There has been a huge shortage of romantic comedies coming out of Bollywood since the last few years.

Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor starrer Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar which is set to arrive in cinemas on March 8, has created enough buzz among youth on social media. Film’s trailer and songs have got positive response from the netizens and many have even claimed to be eagerly waiting to see this ‘new pair’ of Ranbir and Shraddha share a screen for the first time.

But what emerged during the now routine journalistic chore of going through the social media feeds of artistes and their fans, is that many Hindi cinema lovers are once again in search of good rom-coms. And there has been a huge shortage of romantic comedies coming out of Bollywood since the last few years.

In fact, rom-com output has been so sparse recently that when a couple of weeks ago we were looking to make a list of ‘must watch romantic movies on Valentine’s Day weekend’, we couldn’t find a single Hindi rom-com film from the last few years that could make it to this list.

There is such a scarcity of rom-coms in Bollywood that if we go through the list of upcoming Hindi films of 2023, we won’t find a single rom-com gearing up for release this year.

It was not too long ago, when Bollywood was particularly famous all over the world for producing romantic dramas and light hearted rom-coms. We could find the perfect balance of dreamy sequences, soothing songs, feel-good plots that tread the fine line between warmly realistic and over-the-top portrayals of love with some heart-break in Bollywood rom-coms. It was the biggest selling point of Bollywood movies all over the world.

But in the last half decade, especially after the increasing popularity of south Indian action movies, and not so good response to their rom-coms, Bollywood filmmakers have also opted for the safer route of over the top-action-dramas, crime dramas, and social dramas. Although it is good to see Bollywood filmmakers exploring new genres, at the same time, they shouldn’t have completely given up on their biggest forte and what gave Hindi cinema its true identity.

Romantic comedy is one genre that will always have die heart fans and it will never go out of fashion. And the proof of this lies in the sudden rise in popularity of K-dramas among Indian youth. The void of good rom-coms left by Bollywood is being filled by K-dramas. In fact these k-dramas have gained such huge popularity in just last couple of years, that many OTT platforms are even dubbing it in Hindi and other regional languages.

Therefore there is a lot riding on the success of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar. And if it becomes huge blockbuster, it would give another renaissance to this Bollywood’s now almost non-existent genre. And once again we will get to watch good rom-coms in Hindi.
