Highly recognised director, David Lynch, has passed away at the age of 78, after battling a prolonged illness from long. The American filmmaker whose works include only cult classics like Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Drive passed away on January 16th,2025. The news of the death was announced by Lynch’s family, who issued an official news on his facebook page.
The message on the official social media handle read, “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ … It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.” The cause of his demise is said to be having battled long with the disease called emphysema, a chronic lung-related disease that happens due to heavy smoking. Last year in the month of August, the director revealed to his fans that he is struggling with this disease and in an abrupt twist of events, January 2025 marked his last moments of breathing alive.
Tributes from the entire Hollywood industry poured in as the news of David Lynch’s death broke out. Steven Spielberg, who cast him as John Ford in his semi-autobiographical drama praised his exemplary making of filns, and reflected how the entire world is going to miss this original and unique voice. Following in the statement he said, “His films have already stood the test of time and they always will.” Meanwhile, Kyle Mclachlan who was lucky enough to work In Lynch’s Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks as well as in Dune also penned a heartfelt tribute. Taking it to his instagran, Kyle highlighted that, “While the world has lost a remarkable artist, I’ve lost a dear friend who imagined a future for me and allowed me to travel in worlds I could never have conceived on my own.”
Naomi Watts, who starred in Mulholland Drive and the Twin Peaks reboot, wrote of him as, “My heart is broken. My Buddy Dave… The world will not be the same without him. His creative mentorship was truly powerful. He put me on the map“. Actor James Gunn also shared a snap and wrote, “You jnspired so many of us”. Many other stars who have worked with David Lynch are taken aback by the news and have reportedly shared their heartfelt tributes to the 78 year old man. Some of the names include Laura Harring, Lara Flynn and filmmakers Ron Howard,John Carpenter and Edgar Wright as well.
The director’s death comes as an uncertain news nobody thought about. While the Lynch family requests for privacy in this sensitive moment, the news has shaken the entire celeb industry as they know how big of a gem they’ve lost in the name of a film director.
