A few months back Mindy Kaling’s coming-of-age comedy Netflix series titled Never Have I Ever about an Indian a teenage girl growing up in the United States took the internet by storm. Everyone loved the story of the quirky yet smart first-generation Indian American trying to fit into society. With the show, Mindy Kaling used her ‘relationship with being Hindu’ and the experience of ‘straddling the lines of two cultures’. She used it all to narrate a beautiful story of 15-year old Devi and her desperation to feel that she belongs in society. Never Have I Ever featured Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Poorna Jagannathan, and Richa Moorjani as the main leads alongside Darren Barret and Jaren Lewison won over the hearts of the millions. Lee Rodriguez and Romona Young who played Devi’s (Maitreryi’s) best friends also did commendable acting. Meanwhile, reports claim that Netflix has renewed Kaling’s series for the second season. The news comes just two months after the show launched to critical acclaim. The plot of the second season will see Maitreyi return alongside the other lead members of the hit series and follow her journey thereafter. Talking about the show, Mindy said, “A lot of Devi’s relationship with her faith was inspired by my relationship with being Hindu. I do consider myself a Hindu, but I also feel insecure about my understanding of my own religion.” Kaling further added, “The scene where Devi prays to her household shrine of Gods, it’s a lot similar to my upbringing. And when I was a teenager, I resisted wearing Indian clothes because while beautiful, I found them itchy and hard to wear.” Mindy Kaling has co-created the much-loved series with Lang Fisher and also co-executed produced the show.
