When Tejasswi Prakash’s Serial ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ Was Taken Off-Air Due To Cringe Content

Tejasswi Prakash was in a huge controversy in 2017 and her show 'Pehredaar Piya Ki' was taken-off after massive backlash.

Television actress Tejasswi Prakash has been making headlines after she won Bigg Boss season 15 and also bagged Ekta Kapoor’s Naagin 6 as a lead. Fans are super-exited to see the Bigg Boss 15 winner in a glamourous avatar as Naagin.

But did you know that one of Tejasswi Prakash’s serials was once taken off-air due to its cringe content?

Indian daily soaps are known for melodramatic storylines, over the top emotions and dialogue delivery. But in 2017, all limits were crossed when Sony channel introduced a new show titled ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ at primetime slot – 8:30 pm. It featured Tejasswi Prakash (Diya Ratan Maan Singh) and child actor Affan Khan (Ratan Maan Singh) as the lead couple. The show followed the lives of a 9-year-old Rajput prince and an 18-year-old princess after they got married. It showed disturbing content like the couple going on a honeymoon to London while the boy was still studying in primary school.

The show received massive criticism on social media. A petition was also started against the show questioning the content of the show. It read, “Pehredar Piya Ki, a 10-year-old impressionable little kid (“piya”) caressing and stalking a lady who’s more than double his age and filling sindoor in her maang is being telecasted at prime time 8:30 pm on SONY. We want a ban on the serial. We do not want our kids to be influenced by such TV serials. Join us in signing the petition to ban this serial.”

The show that first premiered on 17 July was moved to a later slot of 10:30 PM after the backlash and the petition. However, the criticism didn’t stop for the alleged promotion of child marriage, and hence the BCCC (Broadcasting Content Complaints Council) also asked Sony to issue a disclaimer that the channel/show does not support child marriage.

Unhappy with this decision, Sumeet Hukamchand Mittal, the producer of Pehredaar Piya Ki, pulled the show off-air stating that it was a creative decision. The controversial show came to an end on Aug 28, 2017, i.e, almost a month after it was first premiered.

Later, the makers came back with a new season and it was titled ‘Rishta Likhenge Hum Naya’. It took a 12-year leap and premiered in November 2017. The new version also featured Tejasswi Prakash reprising her role as Diya Ratan Maan Singh and Rohit Suchanti stepped into Affan Khan’s shoes.
