Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is the longest-running and one of the most successful shows in India. It even holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running daily sitcom on television by episode count. Up and running since 2008, the show has been spreading laughter and joy amongst the Indian audience every night at 8:30 PM. Actor Shailesh Lodha plays the role of Taarak Mehta. He is the narrator of the show who is a writer and poet by profession.
We often read news of leading television actors charging a hefty amount per episode. However, Shailesh Lodha was once embarrassed when his daughter asked him about his income.
During the new show announcement titled ‘Waah Bhai Waah’, Shailesh was asked if there was an incident that prompted him to write his famous poem ‘Betiyaan’. The actor said, “It is one of the most viral poetries. We, as Television actors, have everything except time. There was a time years ago when I was doing multiple things. So, I had everything but time. My daughter was very young. She was in Jodhpur back then. And I went to Udaipur for a show. She called me and asked me if I would come to Jodhpur to meet her. I said that I couldn’t come because I was busy with work. She then again called me and asked how much I charge for one day. I asked why she wanted to know that. She then said, ‘Next week is the annual day of my school and I am performing on stage. Shall I talk to the principal and call you commercially for one day as a chief guest so that you can see me?’. I had no answer to her question. I felt like the poorest person on Earth after hearing this question. And that day, I realized that we don’t value what we have in our lives. And that day, I wrote this poem on the flight on a tissue paper.”

Shailesh is married to a management author, Swati Lodha, and has a daughter Swara Lodha. She currently lives abroad and will graduate from college this year.

Shailesh has been playing a lead role in TMKOC since 2008. The show is amongst the top 10 shows on the TRP list every week. According to a report by Indian Today in 2021, Shailesh Lodha reportedly gets around Rs 1 lakh per episode.
