Mukesh Khanna Faces Heavy Backlash Over ‘Shaktimaan’ Revival: “Its going to get badly hit”

Mukesh Khanna faces extreme backlash for bringing back ‘Shaktimaan’ at age 66; netizens doubt its appeal in today’s era of Marvel & DC.

Shaktimaan, the classic superhero show that captured the hearts of kids in the late ’90s and early 2000s is set to return. Mukesh Khanna who played the iconic role and owns Bheeshm International, recently shared a teaser on his company’s YouTube channel, announcing the revival. On November 8, Mukesh Khanna received mixed responses with many fans expressing nostalgia while others, especially on Reddit, voiced doubts and criticism about whether the show could resonate with today’s audience.

On the Reddit platform, users quickly shared their thoughts on the teaser. Some found the return exciting while others described it as “cringe”, questioning whether it could succeed in a world dominated by Marvel and DC superheroes. One Reddit user commented, “Uncle thinks he’s sitting on a gold mine and should protect it at all costs. Probably the reason the movie would either never make it to the floors or will not work. I mean, the only reason it will work is because of pure nostalgia.”

Another user noted, “It will never work even with nostalgia. People don’t remember how cringe it was”. Some users went further, pointing out that kids and teens today have access to globally popular superhero universes like the MCU and DCU, suggesting that Shaktimaan may feel outdated. “In the age of MCU & DCU mania, Mukesh brings back this for kids & teenagers… He lacks imagination & innovation — emblematic of regressiveness,” one comment read.

The original Shaktimaan aired on DD National from 1997 to 2005, becoming a massive hit with its storytelling and inspirational messages. However, some users argued that today’s audience are more exposed to modern superhero stories, might not connect with the same excitement. “It’s not the 1990s or early 2000s anymore,” noted another commenter. “People from that time might watch it for nostalgia but the new generation doesn’t give a flying damn about it. They should have made a documentary rather than a series. It’s going to get badly hit.”

In his announcement post, Mukesh Khanna expressed his motivation to bring Shaktimaan back with a purpose. His caption read, “It’s Time For HIM to RETURN. Our First Indian SUPER TEACHER- SUPER HERO. As Darkness And Evil prevails over Children of Today… It’s time for him to return. He returns with a Message. He returns with a Teaching. For today’s generation. Welcome Him. With both hands!”

Khanna’s post highlighted his belief in Shaktimaan as a character who could inspire values in the younger generation, similar to the impact the show had decades ago. However, whether this vision aligns with current viewer expectations remains uncertain.
