Ekta Kapoor’s TV reality show ‘Lock Upp’ might go off air before the finale. The show makers received a restraining order from Hyderabad City Civil Court on April 29, 2022.
The order prohibits the respondents Ekta Kapoor, Alt Balaji, MX Player, and Endemol Shine from exhibiting the ‘Lock Upp’ series on any electronic media, social media, OTT platforms, or any other media. In view of the said order, the said respondents cannot exhibit the Lockupp series from now onwards.
The order reads, “In the subject cited IA, the Court of XI Additional Chief Judge, City Civil Court at Hyderabad, passed injunction order today i.e., 29.04.2022, restraining the respondents therein, viz„ (i) ALT Balaji, (ii} Balaji Tele Films Limited, {iii) Endemol Shine India (Endemol India Pvt. Limited), (iv) Smt.Ekta Kapoor and (v) Mx Player, their henchmen and agents or any other person working on their behalf from releasing, exhibiting, publishing the series in the name of ‘Lockupp’ or in any other name by the respondents in theatres, OTT platforms, YouTube, any electronic media and social media, etc., pending disposal of the suit. In view of the said order, the said respondents cannot exhibit the Lock Upp’ series from this day.”
The court passed the order after conducting a trial and checking the documents of the petitioner, Abdul Haleem Baig who is the sole rights holder of the story and the script of the concept of The Jail. The concept of ‘Lock Upp’ is owned by Pride Media through its proprietor, Sanober Baig, and was written by Shaantanu Ray and Sheershak Anand. They registered it under the copyright act on March 7, 2018. Mr Baig had earlier described how the concept was developed, giving the details of the money invested by him at various stages of concept development.
He earlier said, “When I saw the promo of the said show I was in shock. I have been in touch with Abhishek Rege from Endemol Shine for a long time and had several meetings about the subject in Hyderabad. He had promised that once the market gets better, we will get going. The show is not only similar to our concept but an absolute copy of the same. I could not believe that somebody could plagiarise the concept to such an extent. We have prayed to the court for infringement of the copyright and have got a stay order.”
Lock Upp is produced by Ekta Kapoor and hosted by Kangana Ranaut. The show features controversial celebrities locked up inside a jail, deprived of luxuries.
