It was the third episode of Nach Baliye 1. After our performance on a Kishor Kumar classic, 'Aake Seedhi Lagi', the shoot was halted and Raj and I were sent back on stage. Unbeknownst to us, one bridge was already planted on the track pit and Saroj Khan ji walked over it to crossover to our side. She presented us with 101 rupees as SHABASHI for our efforts, a tredition started by her Guru Shri Sohanlal Master, and one that she was keeping alive. Saroj ji was very vocal, healthily critical, and honest with her remarks, whenever our performance fell short of her expectations. But very generous in her appreciation for a good one, even when our backs were listening. She was true to her craft. This was the Saroj Khan Raj and I knew. She was a legend. No other choreographer has ruled a complete decade in the industry, the way she did. So many actresses owe their scintillating dance numbers and success to her. The Queen of choreography is dead. Long live the Queen.
