The new head James Gunn is doing several changes to the DC universe. Gunn took over DC Studios with Peter Safran on November 1, and since then, there have been several controversial decisions. After firing Henry Cavill from Superman and putting on hold Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 3, Gunn has put yet another upcoming project on Halt.
There had been rumours from the last few weeks that the studio won’t be moving forward with a sequel to Black Adam. And Dwayne Johnson confirmed in a lengthy message posted to Twitter that the superhero film is not moving forward for the immediate future. Sharing the message, The Rock penned, “My passionate friends, I wanted to give you a long-awaited Black Adam update regarding the character’s future in the new DC Universe.”
Johnson added that James Gunn and he recently connected, and Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling. However, the former WWE wrestler revealed that DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters. Dwayne also hinted that he may be returning to the DC Extended Universe sometime shortly, though the timeframe for his return could be many years down the road.
Johnson concluded his note by saying, “After 15 years of relentless hard work to finally make Black Adam, I’m very proud of the film we delivered for fans worldwide. I will always look back on the fan reaction to Black Adam with tremendous gratitude, humility and love. We did great.” Gunn retweeted Dwayne Johnson’s statement adding, ‘Love @TheRock & I’m always excited to see what he & Seven Bucks do next. Can’t wait to collaborate soon.’
Black Adam has been proved a blockbuster at the box office, debuting with $67 million en route to $167.7 million domestically and $391.1 million worldwide, with the post-credit scene teasing the likely sequel. Just days after Black Adam opened in theatres, it was reported that Gunn and Safran were taking over Warner Bros.’ DC Films division, which was to be rebranded as DC Studios, with the duo taking over effective November 1.
Meanwhile, The Rock’s statement comes just a day after James Gunn released a statement about online harassment, where he stated, ‘Disrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions.’ Though Gunn shared about the harassment, it is likely that many fans are going to be upset about these developments, since the end of Black Adam featured a cameo by Henry Cavill as Superman, teasing a certainly epic showdown between both of these powerful characters.
