Sean Penn, known for his candid nature, recently criticized the Academy Awards organizers, calling them “cowards.” During an appearance at the Marrakech Film Festival, where he was honored with a career tribute, the 64-year-old actor expressed his disappointment with the Oscars. According to Variety, Penn accused the ceremony of restricting cultural diversity and creativity in filmmaking.
Speaking at a press conference, he stated, “The Academy have exercised really extraordinary cowardice when it comes to being part of the bigger world of expression, and in fact, have largely been part of limiting the imagination and very limiting of different cultural expressions. So I don’t get very excited about what we’ll call the Academy Awards.
Penn admitted that he rarely finds the Academy exciting unless they recognize films he holds in high regard. He cited examples such as, The Florida Project, I’m Still Here, and the upcoming Emilia Perez, emphasizing that such films are exceptions rather than the norm at the Oscars.
While he appeared at the event with her 30 year old girlfriend, making it a first-ever public appearance together, Sean Penn was awarded with the lifetime achievement award from Italian actor Valeria Golino on the evening.
