Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein Season 2 Critic Review:

The dark gets blacker.

A recap of Season 1: Purva (Anchal Singh), daughter of ruthless neta Akheraj Awasthi (Saurav Shukla), a don-like figure with the authorities at his beck and call and an army of goons, has always obsessed over and been a thorn in the flesh of good boy Vikrant Singh Chauhan (Tahir Raj Bhasin). To add to his misery, Vikrant’s father (Brijendra Kala) has always been a servile, loyal employee of the Awasthis, afraid to go against Akheraj even if it means pushing his son towards Purva. Vikrant had instinctively and steadfastly spurned Purna’s friendship even in school and could heave a sigh of relief only when she was packed off to the UK. He had a dream future planned with Shikha (Shweta Tripathi), the love of his life, when Purva returned as an adult, obsession intact and ready to claim him as hers once again. With Akheraj willing to go to any lengths to get her what she desires, getting rid of Purva was Vikrant’s only way out of a marriage he dreaded. It was, unwittingly, Vikrant’s first step towards turning himself into an unrecognisably dark person, no different from the Awasthis.

Onto Season 2.

Purva gets a dark, back story and an ardent admirer in James Bond-like Guru (Gurmeet Choudhary) in the UK before the Vikrant-Purva-Shikha triangle gets bloodier.

Desperation all around – Guru’s in love with Purva. Purva wants husband Vikrant. Vikrant wants Shikha. Shikha’s got what seems to be a decent, understanding husband. Awasthi Senior wants Purva’s happiness at any cost.

Somebody wants Purva dead. Somebody across the border wants her alive.

Irritants like a humourless comedy track forced in via Vikrant’s best friend Golden (Anant Joshi), more muscle from kidnapper-hitman Jalan (Arunoday Singh) and some intrigue from a shadowy super boss (Varun Badola), keep getting added to the plot.

Despite the gut-wrenching blood fest, writer, creator and director Sidharth Sengupta (with co-writers Varun Badola, Anahata Menon, Umesh Padalkar) keeps it moving for a handful of reasons. One, he doesn’t go dizzy with the timelines (which most other shows tend to). Two, there is a glimpse of what turned Purva into an obsessive Lady Devil, even evoking a tinge of sympathy for her. Three, despite the multi-tracks, the narration is clear, uncluttered. Four, the character arc of Vikrant is interesting, of one who succumbs to circumstances to become as murderous as the people he once loathed.

So, while it’s a messy plot out there, there is no confusion in the storytelling. Anchal Singh, Tahir Bhasin, Shweta Tripathi and Gurmeet Chaudhary play their parts with enough conviction to view them as Purva, Vikrant, Shikha and Guru.

Sengupta also ends where he begins, keeping all options alive for another season.

Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein Season 2 – Watch it or not?: If the Purva-Vikrant-Shikha love-mess caught your eye last season, take a look at how their dramatic, blood-soaked lives move forward.
