Singham Again Critic Review:
It’s a loaded thali.
Along with an array of stars, director Rohit Shetty has marshalled a line-up of writers too. Story (Kshitij Patwardhan), screenplay (Abhijeet Khuman, Anusha Nandakumar, Yunus Sajawal, Sandeep Saket, Rohit Shetty) and dialogues (Milap Zaveri, Shantanu Srivastava, Vidhi Ghodgaonkar) take up half the credits.
But the mix of many celebrity cops and the many heads in the writing department works especially with Rohit Shetty unabashedly plugging Naya Bharat with its ‘Ghuske marenge’ policy. There are enough whistle-podu moments whether it’s Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) spouting Maratha pride or a Kashmiri youth telling him, “Stone pelting is old fashioned. This is Naya Kashmir” while the tiranga flutters proudly in the valley.
Singham protecting his country with a Danger Lanka (Arjun Kapoor) ominously looming on the horizon is intercut with Avni Kamat Singham (Kareena Kapoor) from the Cultural Ministry hosting a nine-day Ram Leela, retelling the glory of the Ramayan to a theatre audience.
The many parallels drawn between Singham’s war against Danger Lanka and the Ramayan are also potent whistle-podu material with ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Jai Bajrangbali’ heard at key moments in the background score. Like the time Singham is reunited with Avni who’s been nabbed and taken to Sri Lanka. Or the time the Shiv tandav plays when Singham fights and arrests the much-wanted Omar Hafeez (Jackie Shroff) from Kashmir.
While Hindi filmmakers have been following the herd with a cocktail of actors from the north and the south, Shetty blends the flavours by casting Shakti Shetty (Deepika Padukone) as a Singham protégé from Madurai and Satya (Tiger Shroff) as a Singham admirer brought up with kalarippayattu (the martial arts of Kerala) and south Indian women around him. Fortunately, it’s a pleasant taste of different regions, not caricatures. Satya is brawny, brave and has a super fight sequence with a neat battle formation of shields and bursts of fire all over when Ravan in the form of Danger Lanka comes visiting with his henchmen.
And then there’s the effervescent Marathi-speaking Inspector Sangram Bhalerao alias Simmba (Ranveer Singh), as lively as he is fearless. Simmba talks non-stop – with his closed fists and well-aimed kicks too. There’s a scene in a car with Singham completely silent while Simmba chatters. It’s the classic mix of opposites that Ramesh Sippy had popularised with Dharmendra and Amitabh in Sholay and it still works. Simmba brings so much comic relief with him that you can’t keep count of the many times his antics and dialogues have the audience smiling. When one of Ravan’s lackeys denies him a chair, an unfazed Simmba nods, “Attitude dikhata hai?” and springs to sit atop a huge tyre, making it a bring-on-the-claps moment. Simmba hiding from Ravan and his men during a wedding also has its amusing touches.
Veering away from the overcooked Pak-ISI terror theme with villains spouting “Jihad”, “Allah hu Akbar” and “Hindustan ki barbadi”, Rohit Shetty’s Danger Lanka strides in, unconcerned that his shawl is on fire (another fleeting reference to Lanka burning). He is Zubair Hafeez, grandson of Omar Hafeez, who casually explains, “It’s not the usual causes, it’s only a question of revenge for my family. Free my grandfather from your jail and take your wife home.”
Arjun Kapoor is well cast with a touch of comic-menace in Danger Lanka. Ajay Devgn’s silent strength is, as always, his forte. Akshay Kumar as Sooryavanshi marks his presence in Singham’s war and Salman Khan as Chulbul Pandey is dangled in the end credits as the next big bait to join the Cop Universe. New uniformed heroes Deepika Padukone (with a bit of humour as bone-crunching Shakti Shetty) and Tiger Shroff with his special skills are welcome additions who’ve still to get larger roles in this world of cops and crime. Kareena Kapoor, the only non-cop around, gets adequate footage and looks gorgeous.
Ranveer Singh with his Marathi quips is a complete delight. He’s well summed up by Ravi Kishen (playing the Home Minister) who looks at a grim photo of Singham and Avni in Lanka’s den and remarks that only Simmba seemed like he was at a party. Jackie Shroff continues to be fighting fit.
While one could wonder why a whole Universe had to come together to defeat one Ravan who doesn’t seem to have enough of a cause to be who he is, and romance is restricted to ‘oldies’ Singham and wife, Rohit Shetty’s fifth cop film after Singham (2011), Singham Returns (2014), Simmba (2018) and Sooryavanshi (2021) slips well into the franchise of loyal, dutiful cops.
Singham Again Movie – Watch Or Not?: Ranveer Singh alone is reason enough to buy a ticket.
