Shekhar Home Critic Review:
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective by any name will be a genius at deduction with an unflappability that borders on the eccentric. So when writers Aniruddha Guha, Niharika Puri and Vaibhav Vishal plonk the sleuth in West Bengal and hand him to directors Srijit Mukherji and Rohan Sippy, Sherlock becomes Shekhar and Holmes gets the quaint surname, Home. Shekhar Home (Kay Kay Menon) in a remote place called Lonpur meets his Dr Watson when former army doctor Jayvrat Sahni (Ranvir Shorey) lands at Khasha Blanka, run by Mrs H (Shernaz Patel). H for Hendrick.
Fortunately, with the 90s as a backdrop, a serial murderer who leaves a bloody ‘U’ on the victim, a blackmailer hounding a politician, a 150-year-old killer-ghost and an international arms dealer who goes by the name M, are tracked down by Home and his partner with the use of good old grey cells and sniffing skills, not by gizmos and computer wizardry. Home knows who’s coming his way by the sound of the footsteps; he assesses people and situations with astute observation and has a zen-like tranquillity doing pranayam, strumming an instrument and putting his long finger on his lip as his mind ticks. His ‘huh’ gets a tad annoying but there is light humour sprinkled so well that a bit of irritation may be overlooked. A sample of the amusement: when Lonpur’s Inspector Laha (played brilliantly by Rudranil Ghosh) is about to curse, his little kid promptly closes his ears. Do pay attention to the dialogues. If you don’t listen carefully, you could miss Home’s ‘I hate tears’ asides (the famous line from Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand). Or the way he remarks, “Cheater is an American distortion. The word is cheat.”
By limiting the season to six quick episodes, the adventures of Shekhar Home make an amusing watch. Iravati/Iraboty (Rasika Dugal) with her own deduction skills comes in as a musician to provide an unspoken chemistry with Shekhar. As in the original Sherlock, Home has a brother (Kaushik Sen) in the Secret Service who occasionally turns up to enlist Shekhar’s genius. Kirti Kulhari playing Mumtaz/Shanti, a mystery villain, is unfortunately not at her sparkling best, coming off more like a local Phoolan Devi. Ranvir Shorey partners Kay Kay well. But it is Menon (with his dimples) who carries the show.
Shekhar Home – Watch Or Not?: It’s an entertaining watch, not an intense one.
Shekhar Home Review Score Rating: 2.5 out of 5 (i.e. 2.5/5)
