Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba Critic Review:
Do watch Haseen Dillruba (2021) before you move to its sequel. It will help understand the craziness of Rani (Taapsee Pannu) and Rishabh Saxena (Vikram Massey).
In 2021, the ‘recently widowed’ Rani had narrated story after story to Inspector Kishor (Aditya Srivastava) after her husband Rishu’s hand had been found in a fire that had ‘killed’ him. It had ended with the policeman realising how the couple had tried to befuddle the authorities. The dead man was actually Neel Tripathi (Harshvardhan Rane), Rishu’s cousin. But where’s Rishu?
Writer Kanika Dhillon’s labyrinthine story that had showcased Rani’s warped feminism stays twisted and complex but this time, the couple on the run is less feminism-heavy and focusses unwaveringly on the Saxenas who are madly in love with each other but must live apart since he’s supposed to be dead. It’s only if Rishu’s found that the UP police will have a case.
Author Dinesh Pandit’s books which played a part in the first instalment continue to pop up now and then giving a refreshing dimension to the murder-and-romance story. It’s almost as if the books and its author are a character by themselves.
Director Jayprad Desai and Kanika maintain the pressure and the interest with the introduction of two new names. Kishor has enlisted the assistance of Mritunjay (Jimmy Shergill), a cop who goes after a trail like a sniffer dog and goes for the kill like a Rottweiler. He is also the dead Neel’s uncle, Montu Chacha, making it personal for him. The noose is tightening around Rishu.
Meanwhile, mild-mannered compounder Abhimanyu (Sunny Kaushal) enters Rani’s life, besotted with her. He’s even ready to wait for hours in the rain for her – outside her hair clinic, outside a movie hall. With no family behind him, Rani gets his full focus. This time, Rani does have a career instead of being the vacuous bahu who only spouts feministic jargon.
To put off the uncle-cop tracking Rishu, Rani turns to Abhimanyu.
It’s an interesting mix of characters, each with its own colour. Of course, there are unnecessary elements like Rishu’s landlady-on-a-crutch who’s hitting on him, wanting ‘palbhar wala pyaar’.
But the good part is that it is a different story that Jayprad and Kanika are telling this time. There are twists and turns with the Kishor-Montu Chacha team ahead in places and Rani- Rishu one-upping them in ways unbelievable.
Against a backdrop of twisted minds, hungry crocodiles in a lake and a pile of Dinesh Pandit’s books, the cops and criminals story keeps moving. It’s so unrelenting that it gets weary at times. But it is an exhilarating and interesting rollercoaster that keeps the door wide open for yet another sequel.
The performances of all the four main characters are sturdy. For a change, Taapsee Pannu doesn’t shoot off her dialogues like a bullet train. Vikram Massey plays Rishu with several different emotions fleeting across his face. He is so watchable. The addition of Jimmy Shergill is delightful and adds weight to the team of cops. Sunny Kaushal makes a good fit as Abhimanyu.
Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba Movie – Watch Or Not?: Even if there are unnecessary distractions and the usual background songs play during sequences like a wedding, the sequel is an interesting watch.
