Call Me Bae Critic Review:
Move over, Emily In Paris. We have our own Bae in Mumbai. Only, Bae’s more about finding herself than a handsome chef.
Move over bro-code. Bae has begun the behen-code. With Saira (Muskkaan Jaferi), Harleen (Lisa Mishra), Tammarrah (Niharika Lyra Dutt).
And move over, obnoxious TV anchors. TRP-ravenous Satyajit Sen (Vir Das), the dad of all that’s abominable, is ruling the waves. A caricature of you-know-who especially when ‘the nation wants to know’ is sneaked in. But Bae has just walked into his territory.
Interesting.
TV colleague Neel N (Gurfateh Pirzada), boring, staid, quite the opposite of SS, has brought Bae in.
And there will be the mother of all showdowns between SS and Bae. Guess who wins in a chick flick war?
But first the background.
Bella/Bae (Ananya Panday) has just been thrown out. Out in the New Delhi rain. No more cars or chopper, no Gucci, no friends, no roof over her head. Her designer life has just come apart at the seams. Sob for bored Bae who talked to her bags and had a fling with Prince (the beefy Varun Sood), her gym trainer. Got caught and thrown out by husband Agastya/Aggy Chowdhary (Vihaan Samat). ‘Momager’ (Mini Mathur) who’d snatched her riding helmet and handed her a derby hat, grooming her to be only the perfect Mrs Agastya Chowdhary, has also turned her back.
But Bae’s Ms Nice too. Nice to her hotel staff, nice to junkies, thieves, animals and birds, and never looks down on anybody.
From Project Aggy she jumps to Project Mumbai, determined to make it on her own. No more depresso, only espresso. Credit writers Ishita Moitra, Samina Motlekar and Rohit Nair for the ditzy dialogues.
If you’re looking at anything meaningful, it ain’t here. Director Collin D’Cunha runs in several directions trying to hold it all together, the plotas vacuous as Bae’s selfies and social media hashtags. The SS vs Bae debate and the return of all suitors on their knees with rings and flowers is pure teen fantasy.
However, don’t tune off. There is a fun, fairytale ambience washing over the glitz and chick flick frivolity.
Besides, cosmetic feminism and a light romp all over Mumbai is a pleasant change from guns and gore.
Also, Ananya Panday holds the show, carrying off Poo 2024 like a champ on the ramp.
Call Me Bae – Watch It or Not?: Strictly not for those looking for substance, depth or anything macho, Bae is for the giggly young, for those looking for a desi Emily.
