Binny And Family Movie Critic Review:

“I want my space”. Such an oft-thrown-around line makes ‘Space’ almost a character in multi-generational family stories. For Indians who’ve grown up sharing even bedspace with siblings, the eternal stomp over ‘space’ can be baffling. It is for London-based Vinay (Rajesh Kumar) when 18-year-old daughter Binny (Anjini Dhawan) is exasperated that her grandparents (Pankaj Kapur, Himani Shivpuri) are coming over from Patna on one of their long two-month visits.

There is a core relationship that is later explored well by writer-director Ssanjay Tripaathy as Binny and Baba, her grandfather, begin to grow closer. In fact, there are a couple of moments that are moving, like a small budget Karan Johar film urging familial bliss and emotional attachment between two generations. Tripaathy’s twist to the K3G line is, ‘It’s all about loving your grandparents’.

It is also relatable since Binny is a rather pleasant young collegian, not rude or wayward or given to making unreasonable demands on her parents or desiring premium brands. She doesn’t. On the contrary, the guilt-fuelled extra efforts she puts into bridge differences brings a tear or two with newcomer Anjini (1970s’ actor Anil Dhawan’s granddaughter) and veteran Pankaj Kapur pooling in credibility with their respective performances.

However, it takes a long time for Tripaathy to get going with his story as he begins shakily. The initial portions that are crammed with routine situations include dad throwing a fit over the eff word in the rap songs Binny listens to and the grandfather making a scene over her late-night partying and short clothes. Too predictable to keep you invested in Binny’s family.

Much footage is also wasted on Binny’s chemistry and friendship with classmates that has no sizzle and does not take the story anywhere.

But Binny’s second tantrum over space which has a tragic consequence and the guilt that envelops her are completely understandable, as is the bond she caringly forges with her grieving grandfather.

On the other hand, the rush with which Vinay calls his parents over once again when his mother is critically ill, comes off as unreasonable because a long flight for an elderly patient is hardly the perfect prescription for the situation. More so when the reality is that medical care is not as easily accessible in London as it is in Patna. Bringing in a family friend as the go-to doctor in London does not make it more tenable, especially when Vinay urges his parents to stay on in Patna passing it off as the friendly doctor’s advice but does not take the medical man into confidence. It leads to a foreseeable emotional upset between Baba and his newly established camaraderie with Binny and family.

And so it is a salt-n-pepper story – some scenes believable and emotionally touching while large parts are convenient and far too familiar. Tripaathy does tie up with a feel-good happy ending.

Binny And Family Movie – Watch Or Not?: It is a clean family watch but wait for it to start streaming on an OTT platform.
