Agni Movie Critic Review:
How refreshingly different.
Writer-director Rahul Dholakia takes his camera into the life-saving heroism of firefighters, so far an unexplored subject in Hindi cinema.
Cut through black smoke and scorching flames for a warm story on how Fire Chief Vittalrao Surve (Pratik Gandhi) and his colleagues respond with alacrity and put their lives on the line to save lives day in and day out. Vittal, Avni Purohit (Saiyami Kher), Jazz (Udit Arora) and Mahadev (Jitendra Joshi) are a team that fearlessly go in to bring out those trapped in a fire.
Co-written by Vijay Maurya, a bit of familial rivalry between Vittalrao and his brother-in-law, the much-decorated cop Samit Sawant (Divyendu Sharma) is played up to spotlight how a firefighter who too saves lives, is an overlooked hero.
Although there is rivalry and Vittalrao’s own son hero-worships his uncle and not his dad, there is a lightness maintained especially in a restaurant scene where the fire chief and the cop meet with their wives.
A thriller is woven in as a series of fires make Vittalrao and his team suspect that an arsonist is on the loose.
While it is a serious subject that brings to the fore the exemplary courage of firefighters and gives a glimpse into their everyday lives and camaraderie, Dholakia adds several moments of humour which make it a wholesome watch. Samit Sawant’s scenes in the police station are delightful and there are frivolous lines like, “Bruschetta sounds like Sucheta” and “Kaamle, araam se kaam le” with a blue film turning out to be a blue flame.
The unveiling of the arsonist and his reasons are a bit of a letdown. One could also crib that a refreshing salute to a new kind of hero follows a rather predictable graph. You know who’ll emerge from the flames to claim the applause of his son. Politicians being boorish is also a much-filmed routine.
But it is still worth a watch not only because it prompts you to take a closer look at a firefighter but also because of outstanding performances. Right on top are Pratik Gandhi and Divyendu, flawless as the firefighter and the cop, bringing gravitas when needed and a smile at other moments. Close on their heels are Sai Tamhankar as Surve’s wife Rukmini, Saiyami Kher and Jitendra Joshi. Udit Arora has a charm of his own as Jazz.
Agni Movie – Watch Or Not?: Go for it. It’s different.
