Ranbir Kapoor opened up sharing his views on the OTT vs cinema debate

Ranbir Kapoor is on a movie spree returning to the silver screen after four years. The Rockstar actor is set for the release of the forthcoming film Shamshera on 22nd July. He was last featured in the character of Sanjay Dutt in a film titled Sanju. In the past four years, a lot has changed in the film industry. Digital space got hyped when cinema halls were shut. Ranbir Kapoor opened up sharing his views on the OTT vs cinema debate.

OTT platforms have ascended rapidly in the last two years due to the global pandemic. Over-the-top channels came to the rescue when filmmakers were bonded to not release films in theaters because of lockdown. Many big movies were made available on the digital space. In a recent media interaction, Ranbir Kapoor who is playing double in Shamshera for the first time commented on the rise of OTT.

According to the Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani actor, box office collection is the most important measure of a film’s success as it gives a clear idea that how many people have seen the film. He also mentioned that there are some projects that are more suited for digital space. He states some films are of a certain nature and those should not be pressurized by the box office collection.

To give an explanation to his point Ranbir gave an example naming two of his films that would have not worked in theaters if released at this time. He said: if I have to release a Barfi! or a Tamasha today, that’s not going to work in a theatre. I don’t know if it will, but I think people would probably like to see that in the comfort of their own homes. A couple of years back, we were saying OTT was the death of cinema and all that. It’s not that.”

He further added: “I think you see it in a positive way that today the audience has got another platform. It’s their choice. We, as makers, are slaves to the audience. Now they will choose how they want to see the film. Your job is just to give them the content.”

“You have to know which film you’re doing, what genre you’re doing, and you have to budget the film in that sense. You have platforms like theatre, television, and OTT; you release it in that aspect, which has been a very advantageous thing”, he concluded.

On the work front, Ranbir is gearing up for Karan Malhotra’s Shamshera alongside Vaani Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt. The film is set to hit theaters on 22nd July 2022. Following that he will be seen with his wife Alia Bhatt in Brahmastra which will release in September. Meanwhile, he is shooting for Luv Ranjan’s next with Shraddha Kapoor.
