IC 814 To Sacred Games: 9 Hindi Controversial Web Series!

Web series often become focal points of controversy, especially when they tackle real-life events. Whether due to sensitive portrayals, historical inaccuracies, or perceived cultural insensitivity, these shows frequently spark debates that reach far beyond their narratives. Here’s a look at some recent web series that have faced controversy for various reasons.

Controversial Hindi Web Series

  1. IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack

The first on the list is Netflix’s IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the series revisits the 1999 Indian Airlines hijacking. The show has sparked controversy, with the ruling party accusing it of “whitewashing” the terrorists by using Hindu names like Bhola and Shankar instead of their real identities. Critics argue this distorts the historical narrative and could mislead public perception of the event.

2. Sacred Games 2

Apart from IC 814, the Netflix show, Sacred Games season 2 previously also sparked controversy over a scene where Khan’s character, Sartaj Singh, removes his ‘kada,’ a sacred Sikh bracelet. This depiction drew sharp criticism from Akali Dal leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who demanded its removal, arguing that it disrespected Sikh religious sentiments. The controversy fueled a broader debate on balancing artistic expression with respect for religious traditions in modern storytelling.

3. Tandav

Released on Amazon Prime in 2021, the political drama Tandav quickly became embroiled in controversy. The show faced accusations of offending religious sentiments and showing disrespect towards the Prime Minister’s office. Certain scenes were deemed objectionable by viewers, prompting legal action in several states, including Uttar Pradesh. Although the creators later apologized and altered the disputed scenes, Tandav continues to be a subject of intense debate.

4. The Family Man 2

The Family Man 2, starring Manoj Bajpayee, faced criticism for its portrayal of Tamil rebels, with accusations of depicting the Tamil Eelam movement negatively. This led to protests in Tamil Nadu and a government request for a ban, though the series was released after some edits. These controversies underscore the challenge for Indian web series creators to balance artistic freedom with cultural sensitivity. As web series gain popularity, it will be interesting to see how future projects navigate these sensitive issues.

5. Heeramandi

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-anticipated OTT debut, Heeramandi, faced criticism over its depiction of Lahore’s culture from the 1920s to the 1940s. While the series was praised for its visuals and narrative, critics, including former Pakistani politician Yousuf Salahuddin, argued that it misrepresented Lahore’s history and culture, leading to concerns about accuracy and the balance between creative freedom and historical truth.

6. Aashram

Upon its release, Prakash Jha’s Aashram faced strong opposition from Bajrang Dal activists who felt it negatively portrayed Hindu ashrams and their leaders. In October 2022, activists vandalized the show’s Bhopal sets and attacked Jha with ink, accusing him of defaming Hindu institutions. The series, which examines the darker aspects of spiritual ashrams, was criticized for targeting Hindu culture.

7. Paatal Lok

Amazon Prime’s Paatal Lok, produced by Anushka Sharma, faced backlash over its portrayal of certain communities. The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, led by Manjinder Singh Sirsa, criticized a scene involving a Sikh man committing rape, claiming it disrespected Sikh beliefs. The Nepali-speaking community was also offended by a sexist slur used in the show. Sikkim MP Indra Hang Subba formally complained to the Information and Broadcasting Minister, seeking a ban on the series for its alleged negative stereotyping of specific communities.

8. Lust Stories

Netflix’s Lust Stories sparked debate with its bold portrayal of female sexuality. A segment by Karan Johar, featuring a scene where a woman uses a sex toy, drew criticism from viewers who found it objectionable. The film led to discussions about the limits of sexual content in Indian cinema and the boundaries of creative expression.

9. Mirzapur

The sequel Mirzapur 2 faced legal issues after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed, alleging that it depicted Mirzapur as a crime-ridden city and harmed its reputation. The Supreme Court responded with a notice, prompting debate about content regulation in Indian web series.
