Disney’s Moana sequel, Moana 2 , crashed through multiple box office records over its Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The family-friendly adventure set a new 5-day opening record by grossing $221 million domestically, taking over the top spot held by 2023’s The Super Mario Bros Movie. Besides this, Moana 2 has even managed to register the biggest opening day collection records of all time by beating Deadpool and Wolverine in the same.
For the unversed, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer film collected $211.4 million in its three-day opening weekend, however as Moana 2 enters the box office, the five-day record has surpassed all the every long-standing collection record.
The PG-rated sequel entered the record books as the biggest Thanksgiving holiday release over the long weekend, and turned out to be the highest-grossing Thanksgiving day ever. It also sailed away with the Black Friday box office record, ringing up to $54.5 million.
Moana 2 also set a record as Walt Disney Animation Studios’ biggest opening in their history. Speaking about the success, Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman said, “Moana 2 has far surpassed our high expectations this weekend and is a testament to the phenomenon that ‘Moana’ has become. We’re fortunate to have an incredibly talented and hard-working creative team at Disney Animation who brought this new adventure to life, alongside our wonderful stars Auli’i and Dwayne and great new music.“
The original Moana, released in 2016, earning a solid $687.2 million worldwide. However, Disney’s decision to greenlight a sequel was heavily influenced by the film’s massive popularity on streaming platforms, where it became one of the company’s most-watched titles.
