The sequel is on the verge to earn at least $175 million during the five-day holiday stretch, surpassing the previous benchmarks set by 2019’s Frozen II ($125 million) and 2013’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($109 million). Industry insiders speculate that the film’s domestic earnings could exceed $200 million by the end of the weekend. Currently, Moana 2 has brought in $85.5 million in the U.S, setting a new Thanksgiving release record. which has overshadowed records made five years ago.
Initially, Moana 2 wasn’t intended for theaters. The project started as a Disney+ series before evolving into a full-length feature. The original Moana, released in 2016, earning a solid $687.2 million worldwide. However, Disney’s decision to greenlight a sequel was heavily influenced by the film’s massive popularity on streaming platforms, where it became one of the company’s most-watched titles.
The upcoming winter holiday season, however, may not see the same level of box-office excitement. December’s releases include Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, but the lack of a blockbuster on the scale of Avatar or a major Marvel title could temper theater attendance.
