The 41-year-old Grammy winner appeared on the Today show on Monday, telling host Craig Melvin his recently revealed baby-on-the-way was a surprise for the couple. On Thursday, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, 34—who are already parents of daughter Luna, 4, and son Miles, 2—revealed the news in his “Wild” music video.
“It was a surprise. A little quarantine surprise, I guess you could say,” Legend stated. “But we’re very excited, and we’re grateful for all the well-wishes we’ve gotten from people all around the world. Thank you so much.”
Teigen revealed over the weekend that she did not know she was pregnant when she underwent breast implant removal surgery recently. The cookbook author clarified that a pre-operative pregnancy test indicated a negative but a few weeks later another test was positive.
“And for many years now, I’ve taken pregnancy tests almost every month, praying to see a positive one day. Just wishful thinking. I never had a positive before,” Teigen shared on Twitter.
On 19 June, Teigen learned the news, the day Legend released his latest album, Bigger Love. “I was scared,” she recalled. “Was pretty positive you shouldn’t get your boobs out while pregnant? Pretty sure.”

“So we prayed to the boob surgery gods that everything would be okay. Went to every appointment terrified. Even without the surgery, I didn’t think I could get pregnant naturally anyway. So the odds just felt … bad,” said Teigen, who conceived Miles and Luna by in vitro fertilization.
She went on, “But what they say so often can be true. When you give up on trying, life has a way of surprising you.”
As for how her children take the news, Teigen revealed they are not on the same page. “Luna is very, very excited,” she wrote. “Miles, not so much. “[Parenthood] deepens your love for your partner because you see them in a different light going through, in our case, the trouble of actually having a kid,” he said. “Then Chrissy’s going through postpartum depression. You just see different sides of that person, and if you go through it and you learn from it and you come out the other end better for it, then it deepens and strengthens your relationship.”
