Zach Braff Opens Up About Florence Pugh Inspired Him Into Making ‘A Good Person’

Zach Braff shares how Florence Pugh inspired his upcoming film A Good Person. “I’m amazed at her talent and said, ‘I want to write this for Florence.’ What I’m writing is going to be really challenging and she’s amazing,'” he told Entertainment Tonight during an interview posted online Monday.

The actor, producer, and director explained that he knew the actress, who he dated for three years before splitting in early 2022, was destined to play Allison from the start. “She is an actress on another level. I mean, she’s just amazing and what I wrote was really challenging,” Braff said. “It wasn’t for your average actor, I couldn’t have written the role for me. I wanted to write something for her and I had this picture in my head. I thought about the diner stand scene and thought about Florence Pugh vs. a legend everyone is talking about. The legendary actor who starred alongside Pugh eventually became Morgan Freeman. Braff said the Oscar-winner doesn’t typically “do independent films” or “films that don’t have funding yet,” but decided to send him the script anyway.

“I was like, ‘Oh god, this is going to take two weeks to read and then we’re going to get a no,'” he recalled. “[But] he called me the next day and told me he didn’t even say hello. Florence picked up the phone and it said, Morgan Freeman. And he didn’t even say hello, I picked it up and he said, “I see myself on every page of this script.”‘ And I said, ‘Is that a yes?’ And then he said, ‘Is that a yes? (Hollywood Reporter)

The drama follows Allison (Pugh), a young woman thriving in life when everything is turned upside down when she survives an unimaginable tragedy and becomes addicted to opioids. In the years that follow, she forms an unlikely friendship with her would-be father-in-law, Daniel (Freeman), and he helps her rebuild her life.

Braff also explained that he has suffered some losses in recent years, including his sister, father, and a close friend, and that played a big part in the film’s writing. A Good Person hits theaters on March 24th.
