Tom Cruise's name was noticeably absent when the nominations for the 80th annual Golden Globes nominations were announced.

Tom Cruise has been nominated in the Best Actor category for the Critics Choice Awards. The nomination comes just days after being snubbed by the Golden Globes. The A-list star has been nominated for his role in the blockbuster sequel Top Gun: Maverick. Cruise will face stiff competition as he is up against Austin Butler (Elvis), Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Paul Mescal (Aftersun), and Bill Nighy (Living). Top Gun: Maverick will also be up for the top honour of the night Best Picture.

Meanwhile, earlier this week Tom’s name was noticeably absent when the nominations for the 80th annual Golden Globes nominations were announced. Cruise was shot down from recognition at the controversial award show, which takes place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, despite his blockbuster film Top Gun: Maverick earning a Best Picture – Drama nod.

Top Gun: Maverick was the highest-grossing movie of the year and was beloved by critics to earn a nod in the top category but lead star Cruise was noticeably missing from the list of nominees. However, last year Cruise returned his three Golden Globe awards won to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in protest of the organization’s behaviour.

Top Gun: Maverick was a rare instance where it received both high marks from the critics in addition to being a box office smash hit worldwide. The film earned a whopping 96 per cent on the film review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes along with a very impressive 99 per cent audience score. It was a supernova at the box office earning $ 718.58 million domestically and $ 770 million internationally for a total of $ 1.489 billion.
