After its global domination, the popular South Korean thriller series Squid Game has garnered another feather in its hat, with the series earning a prestigious Emmy nomination. With that, it also makes history for being the first-ever Non-English drama to have earned an Emmy nomination. Alongside this, Netflix’s record-breaking sci-fi drama ‘Stranger Things’ and HBO’s teen romance drama ‘Euphoria’ has also been nominated. ‘Ted Lasso’ from Apple TV plus has grabbed a staggering 20 nominations, as the series had won its title of ‘best comedy’ last year. Hacks, Only Murders in the Building and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, among others, have also seen nominations.
For the race of the best-limited series. HBO’s ‘The White Lotus’ which revolves around the set of guests, staff and locale of a resort, who get tangled in dark and twisted truth, when they were supposed to be on a relaxing vacation, has also garnered 20 nominations. The best drama of the year 2020- The Succession, has seen around 14 nominations in the category ‘acting’ itself. In the dawn of online streaming platforms, the Netflix series have taken over 105 nominations, with HBO and HBO Max receiving 140 nods.
Squid Game maker Lee Jung-Jae shared in a statement feeling grateful for the nominations, “I would like to share this honour with the Squid Game fans around the world, who showed us endless love and support” he said.
Talking about Squid Game, the series saw a global purge in viewership and popularity, more so in the US despite being a Korean language series. “I think the foundation of that is how Korean content like ‘Parasite’ and ‘Minari’ were so well received and they were loved by so many people, that it kind of almost paved the way for ‘Squid Game’ to be received the way it did in the United States,” said co-actor Cho Sang-Woo.
