Shakira And Gerard Pique Split After 12 Years Together

Rumours of their breakup began circulating when a Spanish news site revealed that Gerard Pique had left the family home in Barcelona and was living separately.

Shakira is considered the “Queen of Latin Music” and is well-known for her musical diversity. Gerard Pique’s relationship with her was previously thought to be on the rocks. The pair have recently verified a rumour that has been circulating. After almost 12 years together, Shakira and her partner Gerard Piqué are breaking up. The international singing sensation and her Spanish soccer star partner announced their split on Saturday, June 4th.

In a statement made by Shakira’s public relations office, the couple wrote, “We regret to confirm that we are separating.” They added, “For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding.” Shakira, 45, and Pique, 35, have been together since 2011 and have two children. The duo first met on the sets of Shakira’s music video for the World Cup song ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)’ back in March 2011.

Rumours of their breakup began circulating when a Spanish news site El Periodico revealed that Gerard had left the family home in Barcelona and was living separately. “Te Felecito,” Shakira’s most recent hit, may have made things worse. The lyrics are, “For completing you I broke into pieces/They warned me, but I did not pay attention. Do not tell me you’re sorry, that seems sincere, but I know you well and I know you lie.”

Despite the fact that the pair kept their relationship covert, Shakira’s participation on the podcast Planet Weirdo with Holly H in February may have suggested that trouble was on the way. Gerard and the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer were at odds about punctuality, according to the singer. She explained, “My poor husband, slash boyfriend, slash baby daddy, whatever you want to call him, he has to wait up for me so long.”

The pop sensation went on to say, “He’s tired of waiting up. Cause Colombian time is not the same as Catalonian time, Spanish time.” In other news, after losing an appeal on May 26, Shakira is currently on a trial in Spain for suspected tax fraud. Prosecutors believe she owes up to 14.5 million euros ($15.54 million) in back taxes from 2012 to 2014.
