Ryan Reynolds opened up about the future of his beloved character Deadpool, balancing career with family and the success of Deadpool & Wolverine in a recent conversation with Andrew Garfield for Variety’s Actors on Actors series. Sharing his candid thoughts, Ryan Reynolds about his approach to balancing work and family life caught the attention of fans and industry insiders alike.
Reynolds acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Deadpool’s next appearance. He explained, “I don’t know what the future of Deadpool will be, but we made the movie to be a complete experience instead of a commercial for another one.” Highlighting the six-year gap since Deadpool 2, Reynolds emphasized that the character thrives on “scarcity and surprise”.
While fans eagerly await another installment, the actor admitted that the process of making these films can be all-consuming. Reflecting on Deadpool & Wolverine, he shared, “It swallowed my whole life. You can’t take your hand off the stick through development, post-production, marketing, and promo.”
For Reynolds, family remains a top priority. “I have four kids, and I don’t ever want to be an absentee,” he said, noting how much it affects him when he misses important moments in his children’s lives, such as sports events or competitions. Married to actress Blake Lively since 2012, the couple shares daughters James, Inez, Betty, and son Olin.
Interestingly, Deadpool & Wolverine featured cameos from Lively and their children as Deadpool variants, which added a personal touch to the blockbuster.
Reynolds also reflected on the evolution of his career, striving to balance roles that please both critics and audiences. While acknowledging the immense success of Deadpool & Wolverine, which grossed over $1.3 billion globally, he hinted that Deadpool might return in someone else’s movie rather than as a lead. “I see Deadpool as a supporting character much more than he is the center,” Reynolds said.
