Robert Pattinson, the star of the upcoming sci-fi film Mickey 17 recently opened up about the state of cinema and how close he came to stepping away from acting. Speaking with Vanity Fair in the recent conversation Robert reflected on the challenging years of the COVID-19 pandemic and the strikes that disrupted Hollywood.

Pattinson admitted saying, “The last few years for the film industry, starting with COVID and then the strikes, everyone was constantly saying cinema is dying. And quite convincingly.” This sense of uncertainty made him question his career path, nearly turning him off acting entirely.

The Tenet actor further explained how movies started to feel overly “studio-driven,” leaving actors and audiences yearning for something more. “Every actor for two years was saying, ‘What is happening? Nothing’s cool,’” he shared. Despite this gloom, Pattinson noticed a recent shift in the industry that reignited his passion for filmmaking. Highlighting the last few months, he pointed out a surge of bold and ambitious films.

The Twilight actor also spoke about his upcoming projects including Mickey 17 which is helmed by Bong Joon Ho. Set for release in March, the film is one of many projects he hopes will benefit from this renewed enthusiasm for cinema. As he looks to the future, Pattinson sees plenty of reasons to stay in the game, though he acknowledged a time when he genuinely considered retiring after completing The Batman trilogy.
