Robert Downey Jr. is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time as Doctor Doom. Known for his role as Iron Man, Downey will portray the iconic villain in Avengers: Doomsday.
At San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, MCU President Kevin Feige revealed that Robert Downey Jr. will return as Doctor Doom. Feige also announced the return of the Russo Brothers, who directed Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. The Russo duo will helm two new Avengers sequels, Secret Wars and Doomsday, the latter of which will feature Downey as Doom.
Robert Downey Jr. will portray Victor Von Doom, a fresh character in the MCU, despite his previous role as Iron Man ending in Avengers: Endgame. Social media has been buzzing with mixed reactions from fans of confusion and excitement.
The announcement left some fans confused, a user wrote, “I dont understand……. How can he be Dr Doom?”, one commented, “Wait!!! Huh. Am I the only one who finds this weird. My brain is stuck on him as iron man. This will be awkward to watch”. However, on the other hand many fans were excited with Downey’s comeback. A user wrote, “GOD DAAAAAAAAMN!!!!!”, “WOW”, another wrote, “No wayyy”.
Shortly after the official announcement, Robert Downey Jr. posted on Instagram, saying, “New mask, same task”.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in May 2026. Additionally, Marvel Studios unveiled Avengers: Secret Wars, slated for release in May 2027.
