Riverdale fame actress Vanessa Morgan who essays the role of Toni Topaz in the famous series has recently addressed the issue of racism after George Floyd’s death. The 28-year old actress called out her own show for casting Black characters as a sidekick to the white leads. While Vanessa has a brief role in the teen drama, her co-stars Lili Reinhart, Cole Sprouse, KJ Appa, and Camila Mendes get to play the lead in the show. Morgan took to her Twitter handle to shed the light on the issue, she wrote, Tired of how black people are portrayed in Media, tired of us being portrayed as thugs, dangerous or angry scary people.” The Finding Carter actress further added, “Tired of us also being used as sidekick non-dimensional characters to our white leads. Or only used in the ads for diversity but not actually in the show. It starts with the media.” She also mentioned about being paid the least paid actress on the show despite being a regular character in the series. Her character Toni Topaz who has a mysterious relationship with Cheryl Blossom, and that does contribute to the plot of the show. Meanwhile, Vanessa’s co-star Lili Reinhart has come out her in support as the latter candidly expressed about her feelings for the show. Replying to Vanessa’s tweet, Lili wrote, “We love you, V. And support you 10000%.” Vanessa openly speaking about the existing disparity in the show and how it affects her, will surely inspire someone to stand up for themselves and against the prevailing racism in the society.
