It has been almost a month since Liam Payne, former One Direction member and beloved pop artist, passed away on October 16, 2024. His sudden death left fans and the music world in shock with many artists expressing their sadness. At the 2024 MTV European Music Awards (EMAs) held on November 10 in Manchester, British singer Rita Ora, who was hosting the event paid an emotional tribute to her friend and collaborator, leaving many in the audience deeply moved.
Before a tribute video played on screen, Rita Ora left the crowd with heartfelt words as she remembered Payne. “I just want to take a moment to remember someone that was very, very dear to us,” she began. “We lost him recently, and he was a big part of the MTV world and my world, and I think a lot of yours at home and everybody in here tonight”. She shared that Payne had “the biggest heart” and was “always the first person to offer help in any way he could.”
The tribute continued with Ora describing the joy Payne brought to everyone around him, saying he “left such a mark on this world”. Holding back tears, she urged the audience to “take a moment to remember our friend”. Rita then introduced a moving video tribute, featuring a slideshow of Payne’s photos with the music of One Direction’s iconic song ‘Night Changes’. This emotional moment captured the impact of Payne’s life on those who knew him well.
Payne and Ora had previously collaborated on the hit single ‘For You’ in 2018, a soundtrack for the film Fifty Shades Freed. Their professional relationship blossomed into a friendship that lasted until his passing.
Meanwhile, Payne’s family, including his father, Geoff Payne has been managing arrangements following his death. Payne’s body was recently flown back from Buenos Aires to London and his family continues to cope with the loss.
Rita Ora left a lasting impression on fans with her touching tribute, bringing the audience closer in remembrance of the kind-hearted artist that Payne was.
