As movie enthusiasts eagerly await the release of Gladiator II, set to hit theatres on November 22, 2024, legendary director Ridley Scott is already sparking excitement for a third instalment. In a recent interview, Scott revealed that he’s ‘toying’ with the idea of Gladiator III, drawing inspiration from none other than The Godfather Part II. With Scott known for his bold, sweeping epics, it seems he’s not done with ancient Rome just yet.
During a conversation with Premiere, a French film magazine, Scott hinted at where the Gladiator saga could be heading next. He mentioned that while Gladiator II is a standalone film, comparing its emotional weight to The Godfather Part II, the ending will leave room for more. Scott has shared that the themes of power, revenge, and legacy will continue to drive the next chapter of the story.
For fans of the original Gladiator (2000), which won five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe, this news is especially thrilling. While it took two decades for Scott to return to the Roman Empire with Gladiator II, he’s already showing signs of moving much faster when it comes to a potential Gladiator III.
Gladiator II boasts a star-studded cast, including Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Connie Nielsen and more. Scott seems confident about the film’s success, having described the sequel as “possibly even more extraordinary than the first” during its preview at Cinemacon. It’s clear that Scott has ambitious plans for his Roman saga, with Gladiator III on the horizon, pending the response to the upcoming sequel.
At 86 years old, Ridley Scott shows no signs of slowing down. Besides part two and his potential third instalment, he’s juggling several other projects, including a Bee Gees biopic. Known for releasing multiple films within a single year, Scott continues to be one of Hollywood’s most prolific filmmakers.
With Gladiator II soon to land in cinemas, fans can expect another epic journey. And if Scott’s hints are anything to go by, his next Roman adventure may already be in the works.
