Princess Diaries 3 Is Officially In The Works At Disney

While Princess Diaries 3 is in the works at Disney, franchise lead actress Anne Hathaway hasn't confirmed her return as of yet.

The highly anticipated third instalment in the Princess Diaries film series is officially underway at Disney. However, lead star Anne Hathaway hasn’t signed on to return as Mia Thermopolis yet. According to recent reports by The Hollywood Reporter, Supergirl writer Aadrita Mukerji is working on the script for the third movie, 18 years after the last film in the series, 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

Producer Debra Martin Chase, who produced each of the first two movies, is also returning to work on this film, which will be a continuation of the films and not a reboot. Oscar winner Anne has previously voiced her support for a third instalment in the franchise – during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

The actress shared to the outlet, “I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it.” She added, “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.” Despite Anne’s desire to work with The Sound of Music star, the 87-year-old admitted earlier this year that the time for a third film featuring her has passed.

Back in June, Anne shared to THR, I think it would be too late to do it now. There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago. But I don’t think it ever came to pass.” The actress also mentioned how the director of the first two movies, Garry Marshall, passed away in 2016. Loosely based on Meg Cabot’s novel, the film became a box office hit, earning USD 165.3 million globally. Hathaway and Andrews reprised their roles for 2004’s ‘Princess Diaries sequel.

The Princess Diaries, released in 2001, followed Mia Thermopolis, played by Anne Hathaway, an American teen who finds out she is a Princess of the fictional Genovia. Andrews played the country’s queen, Clarisse Renaldi. Meanwhile, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement followed Hathaway’s character as she dealt with her responsibilities as a princess and fended off an arranged marriage. However, the third instalment might be based on the novel, The Princess Diaries Volume III: Princess in Love.
