Oscar Nominations Postponed By A Week Amid Ongoing LA Wildfires: Know New Date & Details

The announcement of the Oscar nominations has been delayed once more by nearly a week due to the ongoing wildfires in California. The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards will now be revealed on January 23, 2025.

In a joint statement, CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expressed their sorrow over the fires’ impact and the significant losses faced by many in the community. They noted, “We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community. The Academy has always been a unifying force within the film industry, and we are committed to standing together in the face of hardship.”

With the flames still burning in the Los Angeles region, the film academy has also extended the voting period for nominations for its members until Friday. Additionally, the organization responsible for the Oscars has decided to cancel its yearly nominees luncheon, which is notable for the “class photos” it traditionally produces. The Scientific and Technical Awards, which were scheduled for February 18, will be postponed to a later date as well.

On the same day, the Writers Guild of America announced that they would delay the release of their nominees “until further notice.” The 97th Oscars will still take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre, with a live broadcast on ABC starting at 7 p.m. ET and available for livestream on Hulu.
